It sounds like you have turned Mute on. To turn it off, open the Control Center by sliding up from the bottom of the screen. In the center, there are four icons in circles, if the far right one is a bell icon, this controls sound. If it is illuminated, tap to unmute.
If the circle is a padlock icon. slide the switch above the volume controls on the side of the iPad to unmute your device.
