To get Emojis you have to add them as a keyboard. Open the Settings app, select General, then Keyboard, followed by Keyboards. From here tap Add New Keyboard and find the Emoji option. Tap this to add. Now when typing tap the Globe icm to bring up the colorful characters. Tap the Globe icon again to switch back to the QWERTY keyboard.
